Meeting Ground. . .

Life, in its wondrous complexity, often brings us face-to-face with those whose views, habits, and hopes differ from our own. The easy path is to stand firm, to push, to resist — yet the Buddha taught us a wiser way: to meet others and our circumstances in the middle.

Meeting in the middle is not about compromising our deepest values, but about understanding. It is a recognition that truth and goodness can reveal themselves more fully when we hold space for another’s perspective. When we listen with an open heart, we learn not only about others, but about ourselves. We see our attachments, our assumptions, and sometimes our fears. In this mirror of relationship, we find powerful opportunities for growth.

On a practical level, meeting in the middle might mean pausing before we react, giving others the benefit of the doubt, or taking time to see the bigger picture. It may mean letting go of the need to be right, in favor of being kind. It may mean acknowledging that circumstances are rarely black and white, and that wisdom is often found in the gray.

When we meet others in this mindful middle, both sides have a chance to grow. We loosen our rigid patterns and rediscover our shared humanity. We give others the dignity of being heard, and we cultivate the courage to be changed by what we hear. In doing so, we build a more compassionate and resilient world — one conversation, one moment, one breath at a time.

May we all walk the middle path today, remembering that meeting in the middle is a profound act of wisdom, and one that transforms us all.

Peace and Love, Jim
