Modern Choices. . .

The Five Precepts are basic ethical commitments in Buddhism:

  1. Refrain from harming living beings.
  2. Refrain from taking what is not given.
  3. Refrain from sexual misconduct.
  4. Refrain from false speech.
  5. Refrain from intoxicants that cloud the mind.

In modern life, these serve as flexible guidelines rather than rigid commandments. They help us navigate complex situations with clarity and compassion.

For example, “refraining from harm” could mean choosing sustainable products or standing against workplace bullying. “Refraining from false speech” may involve being honest in emails or resisting the urge to embellish on social media. “Refraining from intoxicants” could mean moderating alcohol, digital overload, or other numbing habits.

Living by the Five Precepts builds trust and inner peace. You sleep better, feel lighter, and reduce the mental noise of regret or guilt.

Rather than seeing them as restrictions, treat them as supports. They create a container within which freedom and creativity can flourish. Over time, your mind becomes clearer, your relationships healthier, and your actions more aligned with your values.

In a complex world, these five simple guidelines remain timeless tools for living ethically and joyfully.

Peace and Love, Jim
