Breathe Thanks. . .

Gratitude often takes the form of lists—family, friends, health, work. These are valuable reminders, yet Buddhism points us toward a gratitude so simple we often overlook it: gratitude for the breath.

Each inhale is life arriving; each exhale is life returning. Breath connects us to the present moment and sustains us without effort. We do not have to earn it, demand it, or even think about it—breath simply flows, a constant gift.

Mindfulness of breathing was central to the Buddha’s practice. He encouraged students to anchor themselves in the breath, not only as a meditation technique but as a reminder of life’s impermanence and beauty. Every breath is fleeting, and therefore precious.

When we root gratitude in the breath, we discover a practice that is always available. In joy or sorrow, in calm or chaos, the breath remains. Gratitude for it grounds us and awakens us to life’s immediacy.

Take a few moments today to breathe consciously. Feel the coolness of the inhale, the warmth of the exhale. Whisper silently, “thank you.” Gratitude in breathing reconnects us to the miracle of simply being alive.

Peace and Love, Jim
