Rest As Resistance. . .
The modern calendar is relentless.
Side hustles. Productivity apps. Optimization strategies. Metrics for sleep. Metrics for steps. Metrics for output. Even relaxation becomes something to improve.
Burnout in 2026 is not a rare condition. It is a cultural pattern.
The Buddha rejected extremes. He abandoned both indulgence and severe asceticism in favor of the Middle Way.
Our current culture swings between overwork and escapism. Grind relentlessly, then binge distractions to recover.
Neither extreme nourishes the mind.
Right Effort is not frantic striving. It is balanced energy directed toward what is wholesome.
If you are exhausted, ask:
What am I chasing?
Approval? Security? Identity? Fear of falling behind?
Much burnout is fueled by attachment to self-image.
If I slow down, will I lose relevance?
If I say no, will I lose opportunity?
If I rest, will I fall behind?
The Dharma whispers something steady: you are not a machine.
Rest is not laziness. It is maintenance of awareness.
Even the Buddha meditated under trees. He walked. He paused. He did not brand exhaustion as virtue.
In a productivity-obsessed culture, choosing sustainable pace is a quiet rebellion.
Balance is not mediocrity.
It is longevity.
Peace and Love, Jim
