Working Integrity. . .

Among the Eightfold Path’s steps, “Right Livelihood” is one of the most practical. It’s about earning a living in ways that do not cause harm and ideally bring some benefit to others. In today’s economy, this doesn’t necessarily mean quitting your job and moving to a monastery — it’s about looking at your work with honest curiosity.

Ask yourself: does my job align with my values? Am I contributing to harm, or at least perpetuating unnecessary stress or dishonesty? Many of us feel tension between how we make money and how we wish the world could be. The Buddhist approach is not to judge yourself harshly but to make gradual, realistic changes.

You can bring Right Livelihood into any role by treating people ethically, refusing to participate in harmful practices, and speaking up for fairness. Even small shifts — like reducing waste, treating coworkers with compassion, or finding ways to give back — make a difference.

This alignment benefits you as much as it does others. When your actions match your values, you experience less inner conflict and more energy. You feel proud of your work. And over time, this integrity builds trust, opens opportunities, and deepens your sense of purpose — all key ingredients of success and happiness.

Right Livelihood is not a rigid rule but a compass. It helps you navigate a complex workplace without losing your moral bearings.

Peace and Love, Jim
