BFF – (best foot forward). . .
Each morning when we rise, we are presented with countless opportunities—moments to act, to speak, to decide, to simply be. These moments may seem small or insignificant, but in truth they build the life we live, step by step, breath by breath. It is in these moments that we are quietly invited to put our best foot forward.
But what does it mean to put our best foot forward—not just at work, or in front of others, but in all aspects of life?
Putting your best foot forward is not about perfection, nor is it about winning, impressing, or striving beyond your limits. It is about showing up fully—with honesty, clarity, and heart—in whatever you are doing. Whether you are completing a large project, folding laundry, sitting with a friend in silence, or simply breathing in the morning air, your best foot is the one that steps with intention and mindfulness.
In Buddhism, this is called Right Effort—the conscious choice to cultivate wholesome states of mind and action while gently releasing unwholesome ones. It’s not effort in the stressful, struggling sense. It is quiet, gentle, and full of grace. It reminds us that we can speak kindly, even when rushed. We can listen deeply, even when distracted. We can offer patience, even when irritated.
To put your best foot forward is to remind yourself that every act is sacred when performed with care. Life is not divided between the “big” moments and the “small” ones. There is only this moment—this word, this breath, this simple, beautiful step.
So today, friends, walk gently. Walk mindfully. Whether in your work, your relationships, your thoughts, or your rest—place your best foot forward. You will stumble. You may step sideways or even backward at times. But the simple willingness to begin again, to choose presence and kindness once more—that is the truest step of all.
Be well. Walk well. And as always, keep your light bright.
Peace and Love, Jim
